My name is Ryan Tsai, and I am a senior at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles who is serving as the President of Mentors United for Change. I joined Leaders United for Change in the fall of 2019 to join Lyon in creating a tutoring group for a small group of elementary school students. In March of 2020, when COVID-19 forced schools in Los Angeles to close and many businesses were shrinking, we had a unique opportunity to grow. Moving our service online, we found were able to reach many more kids from all across the country! With so many high school kids eager and willing to help out, we were able to grow our group of mentors, and now proudly serve over 200 students each week.

My goal is to create an environment where kids are helping each other. Whether you are in seventh grade or a college student, you have talent to share, and there are kids who appreciate it! I love when our mentors bring stories of students who want to talk about their hobbies, or ask at the end of a session “do we have time to play Hangman?”  We can all be role models for each other, and especially during a time when there is so much distance between us, it is nice to find a way to come together. We are always looking for tutors who are eager to share their talents, whether in core academic classes, or in fun hobbies!  Please contact us if you’d like to get involved.
